26 ms letters written by an NCO during his service with the 40th Field Ambulance RAMC (13th Division), July 1915 – March 1916, with excellent descriptions of conditions ashore during the Gallipoli campaign including references to his attitude to war, his heavy work load as Sergeant ward master, the evacuation of patients, respect accorded to the Red Cross by the Turks and the terrible consequences of appalling weather in late November as well as an account of an act of bravery, apparently by a fellow member of his unit (Cunningham) drawing enemy fire away from wounded men (see 20 November), mention of specific casualties including men from his unit and the death of a man who had been taunted as a coward (see 10 October), the limited success of the canteen set up in October and other food and mail issues, duties after the Dardanelles had been evacuated and references to service in Egypt (January – February 1916) and Mesopotamia (March 1916).
