Two ms diaries (90pp, with ts transcript 27pp) written during his service as a Private with the 11th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (36th Brigade, 12th (Eastern) Division), covering the period May 1915 – April 1917, describing his experiences of the trenches around Houplines, Loegsteert and Bouzincourt during the Battle of the Somme (July – November 1916) and around Arras (January – February 1917), including signal and code information and detailed accounts of shelling (October 1915), his training as a signaller (November 1915), the execution of a fellow soldier (20 March 1916) and his wounding by a gun shot to the leg on 9 April 1917; together with a portrait photograph, an official letter to his father relating to his injury dated 12 April 1917, a certificate of transfer to reserve dated 17 April 1919, and two silk greetings cards for his father's birthday and Christmas 1916.
