Collection of ms love letters to Miss Lane whilst she was living in Durban, South Africa, November 1940 – January 1944, from an officer on SS LLANDAFF CASTLE (2 November 1940, 3pp) recalling their time together in Durban; from Leading Aircraftman N L T Day whilst stationed in Canada (28 August 1942, 8pp) describing his training to be a pilot, the reception he has received from Canadian civilians and his leisure activities; from Sub Lieutenant L A Swift of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (4 October 1942, 10pp) describing the living conditions and food aboard a troopship together with a photograph of Swift in uniform; and six letters and one telegram from Pilot Officer Peter Boyle (16 February 1942 -- 15 January 1944, 16pp) mainly discussing personal matters but also describing his treatment as a prisoner of war and the work of the Red Cross together with five photographs of his grave, a postcard bearing a message written by Miss Lane after his death and newspaper clippings relating to his death in a flying accident in 1960. Also two letters from Miss Lane to her future husband Cooper Balfour during his service in the Royal Navy, 18 September 1944 and 7 October 1946, describing a trip to her father's farm in Kenya, the work of Italian POW's on the farm, rationing in Nairobi, trips to the cinema and discussing their plans for the future, together with two photographs of Balfour in uniform, also one ts copy letter from an African man requesting his job back (4 October 1943, 1p), a South African Intercession paper for Prisoners of War (4pp), a Valentine's Day card and a photograph of an unspecified ship.
