An extensive series of 255 ms letters (847pp) written to his family whilst a student at Magdalen College School and at Trinity College, Oxford (c.1890 – August 1913) mostly concerned with religion and his academic and sporting achievements, and whilst serving as a Medical Officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) attached to the 1/10th (Scottish) Battalion The King's (Liverpool) Regiment (9th Brigade, 3rd Division and from January 1916, 166th Brigade, 55th Division) on the Western Front, August 1914 – June 1917, describing in detail the health of the men; his personal efforts to maintain the health, morale and hygiene of the battalion including establishing bath houses, canteens and providing extra items of warm clothing; the treatment of wounds; the characters of several men and officers who were killed; his attempts to rescue the wounded from the front line; his thoughts on the role of religion during war and his impressions of several Army Chaplains of various Christian denominations; his concern for the overwork of the troops; his plans after the war and references to his investitures by HM King George V for the Military Cross and the Victoria Cross which he was awarded for his efforts in rescuing wounded men during an attack on 9 August 1916. Together with 17 ts and ms letters of condolence (58pp, August 1917 – May 1925) mostly written to his father, the Bishop of Liverpool, describing how despite being seriously wounded three times he continued to search No Man's Land for wounded soldiers, for which he was posthumously awarded a Bar to the Victoria Cross, including letters from Major General H S Jeudwine, the Bishop of Durham, the Bishop of Bath and Wells, Lord Stamfordham, Earl of Derby and the nurse who was with him when he died of his wounds. Also held with the collection are published letters from Chavasse's parents following his death, two copies of an Order of Service in memory of the men of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment who were killed during the First World War (29 August 1917), an Intercession Paper (4pp) including prayers for Chavasse, newspaper obituaries, a poem by Canon H D Rawnsley dedicated to Chavasse, two photographs of his horse, one group photograph of Chavasse taken before 1914, a ts transcript of his letters home (August 1913 – June 1917), printed copies of his letters home (1915) and a scrapbook probably compiled by the Bishop of Liverpool containing newspaper cuttings relating to all of his children. Also held with the collection are two large albums compiled by Noel's twin brother, the Reverend Christopher M Chavasse, comprising photographs, letters and associated documents relating in particular to his service as a Chaplain to the Forces during the First World War.
