Ts memoir (11pp) describing his First World War service (August 1914 – 1919), beginning with his enlistment at the age of fifteen, with the 2/6th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (185th Brigade, 62nd Division), and subsequent desertion in order to enlist with the Grenadier Guards, the journey to France with the 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards (3rd Guards Brigade, Guards Division) and involvement in the Battle of the Somme near Beaumont-Hamel (September 1916), his injury and return to England where he was claimed as underage by his father, his subsequent return to France (March 1918) with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards (2nd Brigade, Guards Division) where he described the death of his friend Edgar Holmes VC (October 1918), his experiences in Germany as part of the Army of Occupation, where he was shocked by the amount of deprivations suffered by German civilians (December 1918), his later involvement in putting down the National Strike (1921), and mentioning the loss of his only son, Flying Officer Eric Calvert, who was killed while serving in Bomber Command (1940); also included is a photocopied article describing Calvert's army service and his son's death, written on the occasion of his 82nd birthday in 1983.
