Interesting ts memoir (8pp, written November 1995) recording his experiences during the Brunei Rebellion of December 1962 while working for the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Limited (September 1960 – 1979), including his background, notably his service with the Colonial Service in Malaya employed with the Malayan Education Service as the Headmaster of the Government English School at Muar in the State of Johore and Principal of the Siltan Idris (Malay Teachers) Training College at Tanjong Malim in the State of Perak (September 1953 – early 1960) and commenting on Brunei's history, becoming a self-governing state in September 1959; life in the expatriate community in Brunei; the political situation in Brunei (1960 – 1962), including the opposition to joining the Federation of Malaya; Awang Azahuri planning a coup backed by Indonesia; the Brunei rebellion (8 December 1962) by Brunei rebels and Indonesian mercenaries who captured the Seria police station; buying provisions to survive a siege; pitched battles between the rebels and the police; five days of discomfort, inactivity and uncertainty while British and Gurkha troops were flown in and then restored order and dealt with the rebels over two days; how the discovery of off-shore oil by Shell allowed the Sultan of Brunei who was going to join the Federation of Malaya to withdraw without losing face (March 1963); and the fears of an Indonesian invasion of Brunei during the Confrontation with Indonesia.
