Description
Object description
An extensive collection of 182 ms letters of a personal and intimate nature, received by him whilst he was serving as an Able Seaman in HMS GOZO (1943- 1944), the minelayer HMS MANXMAN (1945) and the shore establishment HMS GOLDEN HIND in Sydney, Australia (1945- 1946), and written mainly by female correspondents, but also by family members. His mother and his wife write of life on the Home Front, including rationing and the problems of obtaining suitable clothes for his two small children, as well as beer shortages and the difficulties of running the family pub in Northolt, West London, whereas the remainder are essentially love letters, revealing intimate details of the many romantic and sexual liaisons he evidently enjoyed during the same period and displaying his licentious appetite in this regard. One letter, from 'Ruby', describes how she was the victim of an attempted rape in Dover (7 November 1944) and the collection is also accompanied by a small selection of photographs (presumably of the women concerned, but also including one of his wife and child), and a small selection of miscellaneous documents.
