Collection of ms letters written mostly to his parents in Hove, Sussex relating to his military career with the 5th Lancers, covering his training at Sandhurst and posting to Nigeria (1904 - 1907), his service during the First World War and subsequently in India and Nigeria (1917 - 1921) comprising: 17 ms letters covering his training and service with the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers at Colchester, Aldershot and Hythe (April 1904 - November 1907) giving good atmospheric comments on life as a subaltern and his joy at being posted to northern Nigeria; 10 ms letters covering his service with HQ 1st Corps (March 1915 - October 1916) in France covering the issue of respirators, sports, reports of a football being kicked in the front lines during the attack on Leipzig Redoubt (July 1916), his efforts to start a canteen, his impressions of the Australian forces (October 1916) although no details of his duties or any action seen; 36 ms letters covering his service with 5th Mounted Infantry Battalion of the Nigeria Regiment in Nigeria (March 1917 - January 1918) with notes on his journey from England and posting as company commander at Sokoto (April 1917), the nature of his role and training of the troops, and sports; 18 ms letters covering his service with the 1st Reserve Cavalry Regiment in Curragh, County Kildare (July - November 1918) with notes on the submarine threat during the voyage, his comments on conscription in Ireland, his arrangements to be married, and his preparations to rejoin the regiment in France (November 1918); and 43 ms letters (March 1919 - October 1921) covering his service with the 5th Lancers in India on the North-West Frontier. Also with the collection are 13 ms letters written between his mother and sister covering overseas travels (c1910 - 1920) and other family papers.
