Photocopy of a ts memoir (25pp) written between 1995 and 2001, together with copies of a few related contemporary documents, covering his appointment to a regular commission in the Welsh Guards (July 1939), his service as a subaltern in the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards in Gibraltar (August – November 1939) and then in France where, as GHQ troops, they took part in the defence of Arras and he was captured near Vyfweg during the retreat to Dunkirk (November 1939 – May 1940), and his experiences as a prisoner of war in Oflag VII C (Laufen), Oflag VI B (Warburg), Oflag VII B (Eichstatt) and Oflag IX A/Z (Rotenburg) between 1940 and April 1945, with some references to conditions in these camps, but principally describing his involvement in unsuccessful or aborted escape attempts, by tunnel, disguise and other methods, until he was able to break away from a forced march in April 1945 and was liberated by American troops and also giving brief character sketches of fellow officers in the escape parties.
