49 ms letters (84pp) written by him to his mother in Shipley, Yorkshire (June 1915 - June 1919) while serving as a despatch rider with the Yorkshire Dragoons (19th Division) and 2nd Signal Company, RE (2nd Division) and as an officer of the Royal Garrison Artillery, covering his training in the UK and embarkation for France (August 1915), his motor cycle duties and first experience of the shelling from behind the line, his posting to Amiens (July 1916) and Albert (August 1916), his training at the OCTU Uckfield (April 1917) and life as an officer on returning to France (November 1917), the action during the German Spring Offensive (March - April 1918), and thoughts of demobilisation while stationed at Ostend (January - March 1919), including notes on the cosmopolitan nature of the troops in France, living conditions, duties assisting with the entraining of troops and the dangers of riding a motor cycle behind the lines, good description of the atmosphere at the Front and on the roads, poor weather conditions and the contrast with his time at the OCTU and as an officer in the front line (November 1917), and his administrative duties on taking over the battery.
