Ts transcribed diary (153pp) made up of unusually long and detailed daily entries providing a very complete record of his service as a Major with the Royal Engineers, 23 February 1914 - 31 December 1916, outlining the preparation he made before leaving for Le Havre on 19 January 1915 and then his duties as well as his responsibilities as an officer stationed in Belgium, the intensity of the fighting going on at Ypres, his billets and rations, the discovery of a girl's body who had been brutally murdered (8 August 1915) and his opinions concerning chaplains in the army (31 August 1915), continuing with how he oversaw tunnelling operations at Amiens, Fricourt and Arras in France (September 1915), with especially useful descriptions of the grim realities of living in and working below the trenches of the Western Front as well as the underground activity of the Germans, also announcing his being awarded the DSO (March 1916) which led to his meeting HM King George V at Buckingham Palace (27 June 1916) and finally an account of the trip he took to Paris and Monte Carlo (15 - 31 December 1916).
