Printed and bound memoir (73pp, written in 1995, with few dates) of his service first as an NCO, then as a liaison officer with HQ VIII Corps, covering his call-up into the Somerset Light Infantry (1939) at Taunton, Somerset, his officer training with the Brigade of Guards Company, Sandhurst (June - c.November 1940), posting to Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, Bedford (c.November - December 1940), his training as a liaison officer at Oxford (1941) and posting to the personal staff of GOC VIII Corps, Taunton (mid-1941 - late 1942), his posting as GSO3 to the new VIII Corps Armoured Force HQ (1942 - 1943), his selection for the Royal Military Staff College, Camberley (August 1943 - January 1944), his posting as GSO2 HQ VIII Corps (January 1944 - March 1945) in the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, and then as GSO1 VIII Corps (April 1945 - April 1946) in Germany, and including notes on his first impressions of army life and the other recruits, his initial training and duties as an NCO, his impressions of Sandhurst and training, his duties as liaison officer, training exercises with VIII Corps in Norfolk and Yorkshire, comments on various GOCs under whom he served in VIII Corps, instruction received at the Royal Military Staff College, preparations and plans for 'Operation Overlord' in Sussex, his embarkment for Normandy on D+1 and his feelings on landing the HQ in France, the nature of the fighting in the Normandy countryside and the battles for Caen (including his role in overseeing 'Operation Goodwood Meeting', July 1944), the frequent sight of death and discussion of his feelings following the battles, the part played by VIII Corps in 'Operation Market Garden (September 1944), the planning for the Rhine Crossing (March 1945), the difficulties found with local government control in Germany, the part played by him in negotiations for the surrender of Belsen Concentration Camp (April 1945) and his horror at the conditions there, the advance to Lubeck on the Baltic and VE Day, and the success of his role in the administration of the Schleswig-Holstein province (May 1945 - April 1946).
