5 ms pocket diaries kept by him during his service as an NCO with 1/20th London Regiment, Transport Section (1st Battalion, 47th Division) and attached to 141st Brigade Machine Gun Company, Transport Section (October 1914 - December 1918), covering his training in the UK and his active service on the Western Front, with notes on his first impressions of trench warfare, the incessant bombardment and relentless routine, his working party duties in the trenches, his work in the transport section of a machine gun company, the increase in aerial activity, shortage of rations, the disorder of the retreat in the face of the German Spring Offensive (1918), and entertainment and morale behind the front line; together with 94 picture postcards of wartime scenes in France, with a further 18 written to his sweetheart, Dorothy Greenaway at her college in Chelsea, London (October 1914 - April 1918) commenting on his service overseas, and an ms pocket diary (1918) kept by her, noting her daily activities and engagements and some air raids on London (February - March).
