Papers concerning his Second World War service in the 1/5 Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment and captivity as a POW in Germany, comprising: 4 notebooks containing a journal for the period 6 April 1940 - 11 May 1945, recording his part in the campaign in Norway in April 1940, capture by German forces near Lillehammer, and his subsequent experiences as a POW in Oflag IXA (Spangenberg) until October 1941 [with a brief interlude in Thorn], Oflag VIB (Warburg) until September 1942, and in Oflag VIIB (Eichstatt) until the camp was evacuated to Moosburg shortly before liberation at the end of April 1945; 2 further notebooks containing short stories he wrote in captivity and 'chord sequences' of popular songs performed in the camps; letters written by him to his parents during 1939 - 1945, including a letter written from Norway a few days after his capture in which he describes that event; letters from his parents, acquaintances and several American 'pen pals' to him in captivity; an album compiled by his mother during the war containing newspaper cuttings, letters, photographs and ephemera concerning him and wartime events in his home county of Leicestershire; his German camp personnel record ('Personalkarte') from Spangenberg; bound copy of his war memoir 'Norwegian Fiasco'; and a small number of miscellaneous documents.
