Photocopy of a ts memoir (207pp) about his life, including his experiences with the 223rd Field Company Royal Engineers (31st Division) during the First World War, describing his basic training in Leeds, Ripon and on Salisbury Plain, embarking for Egypt and the appalling conditions on the converted tramp steamer, carrying out engineering works alongside the Suez Canal, embarking for France, moving up to the front line and working at night digging and repairing trenches, mending and replacing barbed wire, installing water pumps and constructing bridges; preparing for the Battle of the Somme in July 1916; attending social events including concerts, plays and sporting competitions; and after the Armistice describing how Bolsheviks were trying to drum up support for Communism among those waiting for demobilisation and returning to his apprenticeship as a plumber. Also included are descriptions of his work with the local council leading up to and during the Second World War, co-ordinating ARP Wardens, organising a Civil Defence Force, introducing Air Raid precautions, chairing the local Emergency Committee, introducing the National Savings movement and after being elected Mayor his duties during VE Day and VJ Day celebrations in and around Redcar, North Yorkshire.
