3 well-written ts letters (6pp, March 2004 - October 2004) recording his service on a seven month tour in Iraq (Operation TELIC 4) as commander of B Company, 1st Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers Battlegroup in the town of Az Zubayr, south of Basra, including patrolling the town on foot and attempting to train the local police force and commenting on the endemic crime, the poor conditions, the stoning of his troops, the tribal feuds, the fire fights, the road side bombs and suicide bombings, the hot weather, British casualties, attempts to stop smuggling, hijackings and the destruction of oil pipelines, the local elections, relations with the local police and tribes, and attending a memorial service to men from the 8th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers killed during the First World War; praising the officers, NCOs and men of his Company; and giving details of the insignia used on the uniforms and vehicles of his battalion.
