Object description
Slightly edited wordprocessed transcripts (15pp and 5pp) of two undated accounts written later during the period of his captivity by a Signalman who had been attached to the 80th Anti-Tank Regiment Royal Artillery and taken prisoner on the fall of Singapore in February 1942, the first describing, with a certain black humour, the preparations for his departure from Changi camp, Singapore with a working party that was being sent overseas and their embarkation and voyage on the Japanese prison ship ENGLAND MARU to Taiwan, with particular reference to their appalling and cramped accommodation below decks, the inadequacy of their rations, the restrictions on their movements, the selfish behaviour of some officer prisoners of war and the increasing incidence of illness among the prisoners; and the second recounting the hardships of their journey, by train and then on foot, from the port in Taiwan where they disembarked from the ENGLAND MARU to the far east prisoner of war camp at Kinkasaki.
