51 ms letters (278pp) with ts transcription and 17 field postcards written to his parents between 23 April 1915 and 2 August 1916 during his service with the 1/5th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment (6th Brigade, 2nd Division) on the Western Front, describing in good detail through the eyes of an initially naïve soldier his experiences on the front lines demonstrating his increasing confidence over time, mentioning family matters, life in the trenches, dealing with boredom during time away from the front, the deaths of comrades and also his own injury sustained while attacking German defences in June 1915; he died in Germany on 11 August 1916. Also included are an undated photograph of him, papers relating to: his death and burial, pre war employment at the Bank of Liverpool Limited, membership of the Institute of Bankers and bank accounts, playing cards taken off a German prisoner of war and his identity disc.
