Object description
Photocopy of an ms diary (pp 2-29 only), with ts transcript (15pp), written while he was commanding HMS GREY GOOSE (1st Steam Gun Boat Flotilla) in June 1944 and covering her employment on anti E-boat patrols at night off the Normandy beachhead from D-Day onwards, during which she rendered assistance to the mined hospital ship HMHS DINARD, fought an inconclusive action with two E-boats (10 - 11 June), was dogged by constant engine room breakdowns which necessitated a temporary return to Portland to remedy defects and suffered some damage during the severe gales on 19 - 20 June. The diary includes some interesting brief references to the effectiveness of Allied supporting naval gunfire during the Normandy landings, evening German air raids over the beachhead, the failure of some American PT boats to act during the engagement with the E-boats, and the hazards that the gales caused to the mass of shipping inside the Mulberry Harbour.
