Object description
Bound typescript (214pp) of his `Shorncliffe Diary', April 1912 – August 1914, recording in considerable detail the daily events of his command (in the rank of Brigadier General) of the 10th Infantry Brigade (4th Division, Eastern Command) while it was headquartered at Shorncliffe (Kent) in the years immediately preceding the First World War, giving an excellent panorama of the British Army in peacetime during this period, combined with Haldane's meticulous attention to all aspects of the administration and conduct of the Brigade, its constituent units and the men who came under his command, with particular reference to military training, also describing several `war games' in which the Brigade participated (notably the Army Manoeuvres of September 1912), the diary concluding with events surrounding the outbreak of war with Germany in early August 1914, and a postscript outlining 10th Brigade's part in the 1914-1918 War; several documents are attached to the diary, including two letters written to Haldane by General Thomas D'Oyly Snow, GOC 4th Division (who is frequently mentioned throughout the diary), and a copy of Haldane's `Notes On Training' (1919).
