Interesting collection comprising 79 affectionate ms letters and 89 postcards sent from him to his wife, between August 1941 and October 1944, while he was a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III (Sagan) (August 1941 - June 1943) and Stalag Luft VI (Heydekrug) (from June 1943) where he was imprisoned after being shot down over Germany on the night of 16/17 August 1941 while serving as an RAF Air Gunner and Wireless Operator, containing brief references to his daily life as a prisoner, frequent expressions of concern for his wife and family's welfare and including a moving letter which was to be delivered only in the event of his death (2pp, undated); together with his YMCA log (47pp) containing sketches, poems and family photographs; RAF service release book (RAF form 2520A); 12 loose photographs relating to his service with the RAF, his friends and family, official ts letter (2pp, 18 August 1941) to Mrs Ball informing her that her husband was missing in action, official telegram informing her that he had been reported as a POW (10 September 1941), ms letter (8pp, January 1942) sent to him by his wife describing her reaction to the news that he was missing, the birth of their son and her subsequent illness, also five ms postcards and one ms letter (1p) sent to Mrs Ball (January 1943 - November 1944) and one ms letter (3pp) sent to E Ball (May 1942, August 1944) from two friends who were also POWs; along with one pocket diary (53pp, mainly August - December 1941) and another diary (33pp, January - April 1945) kept by Mrs Ball giving insights into her daily life, particularly her care of her baby and her deep concern for her husband; one post war letter (3pp, December 1956) sent to the Ball family from a friend who had emigrated to the United States; 15 newspaper cuttings from 'Volkischer Beobachter'(mostly undated) and an article about RAF POWs (14 April 1992).
