14 files (225 items) of papers relating to his career as a senior staff officer with the British Army, June 1942 - August 1945, serving as a BGS with 10 Corps (March 1942 - July 1942) and 30 Corps (July 1942 - December 1943) in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy and as MGGS with the Eighth Army in Italy (December 1943 - November 1944) and CGS with the Allied Land Forces in South East Asia (November 1944 - August 1945), including correspondence, war diaries, operation orders, signals, notes on operations and meetings, letters, reports on and accounts of actions concerning operations in North Africa, Italy and Burma, notably the Battle of El Alamein (Operations BERTRAM, LIGHTFOOT and SUPERCHARGE, October 1942 - November 1942), the invasion of Sicily (Operation HUSKY, July 1943) and Calabria, Italy (Operation BAYTOWN, August 1943), the Battle of Cassino and the advance on Rome (Operation HONKER, May 1944), the breaking of the Gothic Line (Operation OLIVE, August 1944) and the breakout into the Po Valley (September 1944), and the liberation of Burma (January 1945 - April 1945), many of which were written by and/or signed by Major General Walsh or Lieutenant General Sir Oliver Leese, who was served by Walsh as his Chief of Staff for three years; and giving an excellent picture of Allied operations, the planning process and the thinking which determined many of the decisions taken by the Allied forces.
