Ms diary (161pp) covering his basic naval training in the shore establishment HMS GLENDOWER at Pwllheli (July 1940) and at the RN Barracks Portsmouth (August - September 1940), his service as a Supply Assistant in the Royal Naval Air Station HMS DAEDALUS and the FAA Depot both in Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire (September - December 1940) and as a Supply Assistant, later Leading Supply Assistant, in the battleship HMS RAMILLIES (December 1940 - August 1941) which was based on Halifax, Nova Scotia for North Atlantic convoy escort duties up to June 1941 and was then based on Iceland with other units of the Home Fleet until her passage back to the United Kingdom in August 1941; together with a laser copy page of photographs of him in uniform. The most detailed and interesting entries describe his experiences during heavy air raids on Portsmouth, RAMILLIES's temporary detachment from convoy escort duty during the pursuit of the German battleship BISMARCK (May 1941), his impression of Iceland and anti-British feeling among the island's population (June - July 1941), the attitude of the sailors on board the battleship USS NEW YORK (11 July 1941) and the speeches made on board RAMILLIES by Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound and Winston Churchill about the sinking of the BISMARCK and the war at sea in general (16 August 1941).
