Description
Object description
Photocopy of an undated ts account (11 pp) written by a former member of her ship's company describing how the seaplane carrier HMS ALBATROSS was completely refitted at Devonport dockyard from late 1943 to April 1944 and recommissioned as a Landing Ship Emergency Repair (LSE), serving in that capacity with Force S off Sword Beach from D-Day until late July, coming under occasional shellfire and air attack and sending working parties to do appropriate salvage and repair work, and then off Gold Beach until 11 August 1944 when she was torpedoed, suffering extensive damage and heavy loss of life and casualties among her ship's company. The narrative, which is accompanied by a photocopy photograph of some of her ratings, also contains several references to the memorable and gallant, if at times eccentric, conduct of her Captain.
