28 ms letters and postcards (60pp) written home to his family while serving as a Private with the 5th Battalion The King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) (83rd Brigade, 28th Division) on the Western Front, February - August 1915, describing his embarkation and arrival in France, the censorship of correspondence, his opinion of the French, casualties sustained by his unit, trench routine and the hardships of infantry life, the prevalence of unburied dead, criticism of what he regards as indifference to the war back home, in particular the trade union problems and shell shortage, and his hospitalisation from a shell wound received during the Second Battle of Ypres (May 1915). Also held with the collection are ts/ms background notes to the letters (3pp), the notification of his wounding from the War Office (AF B104-80A) dated 6 May 1915, and a copy of the BLACKPOOL HERALD for 14 May 1915 relating to Oldham and the experiences of his Battalion.
