10 ms letters written immediately before and after his enlistment into the 5th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment in early September 1914, covering his desire to join up out of patriotic duty despite his father's opposition and the hardships of his first weeks in the Army, together with official papers relating to his service in India with the 1/61st Pioneers and the 106th Pioneers; and 62 ms letters written to him by his wife, January 1919 - August 1921, while serving with the Womens Legion as an ambulance driver attached to the RASC in South Wales and Manchester and prior to and after their marriage in October 1920, with insight into the pain of separation during the eleven month period they were apart and descriptions of social conditions in South Wales after the war, the visit of the Prince of Wales to Newport (June 1921) and preparations for the voyage out to India to live with her husband.
