Bound ts journal (122pp and 17pp of appendices) covering his service as adjutant of the 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (14th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division) on the Western Front (August 1914 - early 1915), as a staff officer at the War Office (June 1915 - September 1916), with 57th Infantry Brigade (19th Division) and 20th Infantry Brigade (7th Division) on the Western Front (September 1916 - September 1917), on a staff course in Cambridge (September - December 1917), with 20th Infantry Brigade in Italy (December 1917 - March 1918), with 41st Division on the Western Front (March - July 1918) and at GHQ (July - November 1918) containing graphic descriptions of operations on the Western Front including the retreat from Mons, the Battles of the Marne and the Aisne (1914), life in the trenches and the attack on Bullecourt also useful references to Bandsman T E Rendle VC, conditions on the Piave Front in Italy (1918), the British withdrawal on the Western Front during the German Spring Offensive (1918) and the Armistice; an appendix to the journal comprises extracts from his letters and his wife's correspondence mentioning the mobilisation of the DCLI, Battalion casualties and the award to him of the MC and DSO.
