Extensive series of letters and postcards (circa 170) written to his wife and daughters while he was a prisoner of war in Germany, and letters from his family and friends to him, mostly dated between 1940 - 1944 following his capture in France while serving as a Medical Officer with the RAMC (131st Field Ambulance), together with a small number of letters he wrote in April - May 1940 prior to his capture, three notebooks including a brief diary of events at that time, his BEF Officer's Identity Card, POW camp entertainment programmes, postcards and printed material concerning his repatriation via Sweden in September 1944, postwar correspondence regarding 131st Field Ambulance reunions and including a brief wartime history of the unit, his commission as a Lieutenant in the TA, photographs, and a few other documents. Matthews was held successively in Oflag VIIC (Laufen), Stalag XXIA (Schildberg), Stalag XXIC (Wollstein), Stalag XIIIC (Hammelburg), Oflag IVC (Colditz) and Stalag Luft III (Sagan), with most time spent in Schildberg (September 1940 - February 1942).
