Notebook containing an ms transcript (12pp) of the diary which he began as a prisoner of war in Nakama camp, near Nagasaki in Japan, in August 1945 describing how the news of Japan's surrender was received, the immediate improvement in the prisoners' rations and morale, the excitement of the first American supply drops on the camp and the warmth of the reception given to them in September - October 1945 during the first stages of his repatriation in the USS JACK MILLER from Nagasaki to Okinawa, by air to the Philippines and across the Pacific in the aircraft carrier HMS GLORY to Canada; together with ms notes (5pp), mostly written on the backs of cigarette packet wrappers, giving outline details of his movements in captivity, their rations and the contents of Red Cross parcels; a cyclostyled ts copy of the official address given by the Japanese camp commandant at Nakama on 22 August 1945 announcing Japan's surrender; and a copy of the November 1945 issue of FAR EAST, the official journal of the prisoners of war department of the Red Cross and St John war organisation. At the time of his capture in Java in March 1942 Miles was serving as an aircraftman with an unidentified RAF unit.
