Poignant collection of papers relating to his service in the Merchant Navy and his loss at sea in 1940, while Master of the SS BASSA, which was sunk by U-32 on 29 September with the loss of all hands, comprising his Identity and Service Certificate, a portrait photograph of him in uniform, an extract from the list of crew of the SS BASSA recording him as drowned, an ms letter from his young daughter (dated 28 September 1940) and a photocopy of an ms letter from his son (dated 29 September 1940), a ts letter (1p) to Mrs Anderson from the Director of the Elder Dempster Lines Ltd, Liverpool informing her that her husband's vessel was presumed lost (November 1940), 2 ms letters (3pp) of condolence from her children's' school (November 1940), a ts letter (1p) from the Admiralty providing further details on the loss of SS BASSA (July 1941), a ts letter (1p) from the British Red Cross in response to Mrs Anderson's enquiry about whether her husband could be a Prisoner-of-War (January 1943) an ms letter (1p) from the Liverpool Maternity Hospital thanking Mrs Anderson for the donation of baby clothes and promising that these would be given to another naval wife (July 1942), together with a printed letter of condolence to his widow from HM King George VI and his commemorative scroll.
