Ms diary (150pp) of his service with the 17th Battalion Manchester Regiment (90th Brigade, 30th Division) in France, from February 1916 until his death in July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, describing his arrival at Etaples and posting to the trenches in the Maricourt sector, occupying positions in the front line at Royal Dragon's Wood, Vaux Wood and Battle Dugouts (February - June 1916), winter conditions in the trenches, night patrols, French soldiers and civilians and their attitude towards the fighting before becoming involved in the preparations for the Somme offensive (June 1916) where he writes optimistically about the likely outcome of the attack and then describes the Battalion's activities on the first three days of the battle including the capture of Montauban village. Together with ts copies of 11 letters, and 4 original ts and ms letters from officers and men relating to the circumstances of his death in action during the fighting in Trones Wood (9 July 1916).
