Ts memoir (20pp) of his service in the 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment (4th Guards Brigade, 2nd Division until August 1915, then 6th Brigade, 2nd Division) on the Western Front, 1914 - 1918, describing his first experiences of trench warfare in the Ypres Salient (November 1914), his involvement in the Battle of Festubert (May 1915), move south to the Somme (August 1916) and Thiepval Wood, taking part in the capture of the Schwaben Redoubt before returning to the Ypres Salient during winter 1916 - 1917 where he was wounded on the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres and did not return to France until May 1918; then his posting to the 7th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (89th Brigade, 30th Division), taking part in a few minor attacks during the last months of war and mentioning the efficacy of German sniping, Field Punishment No 1, the rarity of bayonet fighting and the work of the Army padres.
