13 diaries and 10 journals recording his service in the Royal Navy, October 1919 - September 1945, covering his experiences as a naval cadet at the Royal Naval College, Devonport and in HMS CUMBERLAND and HMS CARNARVON (October 1918 - September 1920); on the China Station in HMS HAWKINS, HMS CARLISLE, HMS FOXGLOVE and HMS COLOMBO (October 1920 - July 1922), mentioning the growing Japanese aggression in the Far East, the Hong Kong seamen's strike and the 'Geddes Axe' before transferring to HMS MARAZION and then joining HMS VINDICTIVE for passage to the United Kingdom (January 1923); then in HMS EMPEROR OF INDIA, Mediterranean Fleet (December 1924 - December 1926); as a Divisional Officer in HMS GANGES before being appointed as First Lieutenant of HMS SERAPIS on the China Station and then taking command of HMS WHIRLWIND and HMS WESSEX (October 1927 - June 1934), detailing the relief work carried out by HMS ANTHONY during the early stages of the Spanish Civil War (September - December 1936); on exchange duty with the Royal Australian Navy in HMAS SYDNEY (January 1939 - December 1940); in command of HMS EMPEROR attached to the Home Fleet and then as part of Task Force 88 in the Mediterranean (September 1943 - January 1945); as Naval Officer in Charge, Penang (August - September 1945); and then his command of HMS MAURITIUS on an East African cruise (April 1949 - September 1950). Together with naval papers relating to HMS WHIRLWIND (1934), HMS ANTHONY (1936) and HMAS SYDNEY (1940 - 1941), and correspondence (including from Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten (1949-1950)), press cuttings and six photograph albums.
