Ms diary (180pp) recording his service as adjutant with the 36th Field Ambulance RAMC, crossing with the 12th Division to France, July - November 1915; establishing their quarters near Armentieres and then moving south to Loos, he describes the treatment of wounded men and their evacuation from the trenches and comments on the types of wounds sustained on active service, revealing the thoughts and activities of a non-combatant RAMC officer while mentioning a visit to the front line where he witnesses the interrogation of a German deserter (17 September 1915), leisure time and life at the Field Ambulance until his move to Vermelles (October 1915) where they came under heavy artillery fire and treated large numbers of casualties, and a further move to Béthune, Verquineul, and Foucquieres where he established a Divisional Rest Station. Together with presscuttings of extracts from his letters written home from France and a portrait photograph.
