Microfilm copy of a ts account (36pp), undated, describing his service on the Western Front with the 62nd Battalion Machine Gun Corps (62nd Division), May 1917 - March 1918, and the 58th Battalion MGC (58th Division), March 1918 - 1919, containing references to his enlistment in August 1916 at the age of 18, his anticipation of being in action, duties as Company runner, trench conditions, involvement in the Battle of Cambrai (20 November 1917), his wounding during the opening days of the German spring offensive (March 1918), his posting to the Army of Occupation in Germany where he describes the nature of the German people, and a brief reference to his service in India during 1920. Together with a second undated ts account (56pp) describing his service with the 85th Command Ammunition Depot at Aubigny, France, September 1939 - May 1940, referring to his duties as storekeeper, living conditions, his involvement in the retreat to Dunkirk following the German invasion, French refugees, the intensive German aerial bombing, and his evacuation in the destroyer HMS VIMY (30 May 1940); then his service back in the United Kingdom as a storeman at ammunition depots in Corsham in Wiltshire, Wembley in Middlesex and Woodford in Essex, the heavy air raids on London and Plymouth, the destruction of his own house in Devonport by enemy bombing, his discharge on medical grounds in July 1944 and work as a civilian clerk at various ordnance depots in Devon until the end of 1946.
