Ts memoir (266pp) recording his service as an officer initially with the 2/5th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers in the United Kingdom but mainly with the 182nd Labour Company on the Western Front, August 1914 - late 1918, describing in some detail the outbreak of war, his joining of the Volunteer Training Corps and the presence of Belgian refugees in the UK, but focussing mainly on his service with the Labour Company outlining their duties and commenting upon the ruined landscapes, trench signs, his billets, American and Russian involvement in the war, a dog adopted by the company, the effects of shellfire on nerves, wounded horses, the shooting down of an aeroplane, mining and a tour he took round some tunnels, recreational activities, an encounter with the Prince of Wales, his first experiences of a gas attack, the German Spring Offensive (March 1918), cooking, relations with French civilians and refugees, the dangers of handling unexploded grenades and nosecones, the Chinese Labour Corps, Armistice celebrations, and also some discussion of the philosophy of war.
