Object description
Printed and illustrated edition (104pp) of the diary kept by a Regular Army Church of England Chaplain to the Forces on the Western Front during the First World War, with particularly interesting entries covering his attachment to the 5th Field Ambulance (5th Brigade, 2nd Division) from August - December 1914 and describing what he did and saw during the retreat from Mons and the Battles of the Marne, the Aisne and 1st Ypres and then to the 6th Cavalry Field Ambulance (6th Cavalry Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division) from April - October 1915 during which time they were involved in the 2nd Battle of Ypres and the Loos offensive, and much more summary accounts of his appointments as a Senior Chaplain to the Forces in Calais (November 1915 - July 1916) and as SCF, IX Corps (August 1916 - August 1918) including comments on the opening of the attack on the Messines Ridge (June 1917) and the Allied retreats on the Lys and the Aisne (April - May 1918). The entries covering the 5th Field Ambulance's fortnight in a chateau at Moussy-Verneuil, very close to the front line, during the Battle of the Aisne and their time in the town of Ypres in October - November 1914 are especially graphic, while there are also frequent references to coming under shellfire, the reception of casualties, burials and conditions in his billets and the working accommodation used by the Field Ambulances.
