Photocopy of a ts transcript (76 pp) of his letters home covering his service as a subaltern in the 9th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, the pioneer battalion in the 37th Division, on the Western Front from January - December 1918 and giving some impression of conditions in and out of the line, his constant optimism about the outcome of the war especially after the Allied advance began in August, and his reactions to the Armistice; together with photocopies of his ms diary (9 pp) and 10 ms letters to his wife written during his appointment as Commandant of 104 Corps Reception Camp in Normandy, June - July 1944, describing the locations of the camp and what he saw of the fighting, with particular reference to his satisfaction at the evidence of Allied naval and air power; and photocopies of his ts reports (9 pp) on the administration and movements of 104 Corps Reception Camp while in Europe (June 1944 - April 1945).
Military conflict took place during every year of the 20th Century. There were only short periods of time that the world was free of war. The total number of deaths caused by war during the 20th Century has been estimated at 187 million and is probably higher.
