Ts memoir (60pp) recording his experiences during the First World War, recounting the announcement of war in August 1914 when he was on holiday in Germany and his journey back to the United Kingdom via Switzerland, then his commission into the 6th Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment (50th Brigade, 17th Division) training at Wareham, September 1914 - June 1915, and then on active service on the Western Front in the Ypres Salient, July 1915 - February 1916, and on the Somme, March 1916 - January 1917, describing his embarkation, trench warfare and living conditions, the presence of German spies, aerial warfare, recreational activities when out of the line, receiving wounds (February 1916) and a short period of recuperation in which he escorted new drafts to the front line, the desolation around Ypres, and involvement in the Battle of the Somme (July - September 1916) before receiving wounds which led to his evacuation back to the UK in January 1917. Also held with the memoir is a short but very detailed ts account (6pp) of the Battle of the Somme, based in large part upon an official report written by a German Company Commander, Lieutnant Kostlin.
