4 ms letters (16pp total) and 1 ms postcard written home to his wife and daughter while serving with the 13th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps (111th Brigade, 37th Division) on the Western Front, February - July 1917, referring to air raids on the United Kingdom, Russian involvement in the war, fatigue work and digging parties and his continual hope of returning home to his family; together with 4 ms letters (11pp total) written to him by his wife and daughter, October 1916, describing their anxiety at the recent Zeppelin raids on London, the conversion of hotels into temporary hospitals and their personal news. Also held with the collection are ms drafts of two letters (3pp) from him concerning business matters; his Pass for Recruits (AF B216, 19 June 1916) and order to report for service (20 June 1916); papers relating to his death in action on 28 July 1917 including a royal scroll of commemoration, printed message from HM King George V, a ts letter (1p) accompanying his award of the British War and Victory Medals, leaflets (2pp) regarding the KRRC statue at Winchester cathedral and two Imperial War Graves Commission registers (29, Part XVII and 29-30) for the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium; plus two photographs of him in uniform and two of other soldiers including ?his brother.
