Ts transcription (241pp) of letters written home to his mother, 4 September 1914 - 26 December 1918, covering his training with the 4th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (145th Brigade, 48th Division) in the United Kingdom in 1914 - 1915 and his active service as a Company officer with the Battalion in France from 1915 - 1917 and in Italy from 1917 to 1918, giving a very good picture of conditions in the trenches and of the life of a junior infantry officer and including eye-witness accounts of phases of the Battle of the Somme (July - November 1916), the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line (February - April 1917), the Third Battle of Ypres (August - September 1917) and the fighting in Italy in the last year of the war. The great majority of the letters are reproduced in full in Greenwell's AN INFANT IN ARMS (London, Lovet Dickson and Thompson, 1935); the author destroyed his original letters after completing the transcription.
