Private Papers of Group Captain Reginald J Bone CB CBE DSO
Microfilm copy of fragmentary ts/ms memoirs (70pp) covering his early naval service (1904 - 1909), his period as Second Captain of the submarine C1 (1909 - 1913), his service in the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) (1913 - 1918), and various employments between the wars. During the First World War he took part in a raid on Dunkirk (1915), and pursued and brought down a German raider off Margate (1915), while in 1919 he was in command of some seaplanes at Murmansk, and describes the work of English forces there; he was successively Inspector of RAF Recruiting (1920 - 1921), commander of RAF Depot, Karachi (1925 - 1929), Air Attaché in Paris (1929 - 1934), and Director General of Civil Aviation in Egypt (1936 - 1939). His accounts of these activities are very short and superficial, with many digressions about Egyptian customs and modern social habits, while he describes very briefly meeting Aircraftman T E Shaw (T E Lawrence) in Karachi, and interviewing Petain in Paris.
