Ms/ts diary (185pp) and other papers relating to his military career from 1941 to 1950 as Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion King's Own Royal Regiment in North Africa (1941), Commanding Officer, 84 Sub-Area, Beirut (1943), Commanding Officer, 714 and 719 Civil Affairs Detachments and Amsterdam Province, Holland (May 1945), Regional Commander, North Rhine Province (June 1945 - April 1946) and Deputy Regional Commissioner, North Rhine Westphalia (April 1946 - December 1949); together with a folder of correspondence and reports regarding his dismissal of Dr Konrad Adenauer as Mayor of Cologne in October 1945 (1955 - 1964); a folder of papers relating to his period as Commanding Officer, Hebron District (1939); official reports regarding the division of the North Rhine province; and miscellaneous correspondence and a scrapbook.
Military conflict took place during every year of the 20th Century. There were only short periods of time that the world was free of war. The total number of deaths caused by war during the 20th Century has been estimated at 187 million and is probably higher.
