Two ms diaries (January 1944 - January 1946) and two ts accounts (57pp) of his service with D Company, 2nd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment (29th Brigade, 36th Division) in India and Burma, January 1944 - January 1946, including: the journey from Poona, India to Burma, January 1944; active service in the Arakan, January 1944, being shortly afterwards evacuated sick to India rejoining his battalion in the Arakan in June 1944 after hospitalisation and service at Deolali and Poona; the advance through Burma from Ledo to Myitkyina, across the Irrawaddy to Mandalay, June 1944 - May 1945, when they were withdrawn from front-line duty; resting in India, May 1945 - January 1946; and commenting on his baptism of fire; the terrain and conditions; suffering from malaria; his excellent treatment in India as an Arakan veteran; the stiff Japanese opposition; celebrating Christmas 1944; the exacting nature of jungle warfare; the impatience to be pulled out of action at the end of the war in Europe; and the importance of comradeship to the troops.
