9 volumes of his ms correspondence and diary notes, together with a modern ts transcription, kept during his service as Commander Royal Artillery, New Zealand and Australian Division, 1915 - 1916, and as CRA New Zealand Division, 1916 - 1919, with excellent references to conditions in the Dardanelles campaign, the calibre of Allied and enemy troops at Gallipoli and the character of Generals Sir Alexander Godley and Sir Ian Hamilton, as well as descriptions of life in Egypt, January - April 1916, where he met HRH The Prince of Wales, and on the Western Front, April 1916 - March 1919, including mention of civilian conditions and his GOC General A H Russell, and references to Divisional casualties and the involvement of artillery in the Battles of Flers Courcelette, Messines (1917), Third Ypres, Albert, Bapaume, Selle and the Hindenburg Line, in addition to details of life in Germany, near Cologne, with the Army of Occupation, January - March 1919.
Military conflict took place during every year of the 20th Century. There were only short periods of time that the world was free of war. The total number of deaths caused by war during the 20th Century has been estimated at 187 million and is probably higher.
