Two small ms notebooks (one handmade in captivity and both also including pencil illustrations and other writings) containing a diary kept by a leading aircraftman with No 36 Squadron RAF as a prisoner of war in the camps in Java at Kalidjati (March - August 1942) and Makasura (August - October 1942) and at Kamioka, a mining camp in the Osaka group in Japan (November 1942 - September 1945) with regular references to the harsh conditions in the mine, the inadequacy of their rations, the occasional arrival of Red Cross parcels, the prevalence of lice and ill health and deaths among the prisoners; together with a small commonplace book mainly containing contributions from fellow Dutch and American prisoners in Kamioka, a handdrawn birthday card from another British prisoner of war (February 1943), a postcard from his parents (August 1944), a receipt for an American Red Cross parcel (December 1944) and a completed copy (4pp) of his interrogation form giving details of his captivity (September 1945).
