Well-written ms journal (110pp with maps, photographs and sketches) recording his service with the King's African Rifles as the Intelligence Sergeant in the Intelligence Section of the 13th (Nyasaland) Battalion KAR (26th East African Brigade, 11th East African Division, 33rd Indian Corps) in Burma during operations in the Kabaw Valley, August 1944 - December 1944, including: the advance after Imphal across the Yu River (August 1944); occupying Habari Hill and Jambo Hill areas (August 1944 - September 1944); the advance along the Kalewa Road (September 1944 - October 1944); operations in the Letsegan and Chinyaung area (October 1944 - November 1944); at Mombasa Chaung (November 1944); the Kyigon area (November 1944); the advance across the Myttha River into Kalewa (November 1944 - December 1944); operations at Ingon Chaung (December 1944); and then across the Chindwin at Paung Chaung to attack Shwegyn (December 1944) before being withdrawn for a rest; and commenting on the terrain, which was some of the worst in the world; the Japanese withdrawal from Imphal, leaving much equipment and many dead and wounded behind; the terrible conditions; his duties; patrolling for information about Japanese positions; problems with leeches; the logistical problems, assisting the engineers to build roads and bridges; training; clashes with Japanese troops; jungle warfare; and searching the enemy dead.
