53 ms and ts letters (113pp) written to and from his parents and family recording his career as a wireless operator in the ranks of the RAF and, after his capture at Singapore, as a prisoner of war of the Japanese on the Burma - Siam Railway, October 1941 - September 1945, including: his service at RAF Compton Bassett in Wiltshire, May 1941; RAF Bath in Somerset, July 1941; RAF Wilmslow in Manchester, August 1941; his voyage overseas from Liverpool (via Durban, South Africa) to Singapore, September 1941 - October 1941; active service at RAF Seletar and in Singapore, November 1941 - February 1942; his experiences as a prisoner of war in Thailand and his imminent journey home, February 1942 - September 1945; his release as a POW, his safe arrival and conditions in Bombay, September 1945; and commenting on life and conditions in the RAF and personal and family matters. Also included are ts official correspondence and papers (56pp), notably his Airman's Service and Pay Book (15pp), his Soldier's Pay Book (10pp), leaflets for troops in India visiting Calcutta (5pp) and Bombay (2pp), ts official correspondence (15pp) to his father reporting him first as 'missing in action', then as a POW, and his subsequent release, March 1942 - October 1945; a ts Post Office leaflet (2pp) informing relatives how to communicate with POWs held by the Japanese, the ms transcript of a speech by Colonel Yoshitada Nagatoma, commander of the Nike Camp in Thailand (November 1943, 3pp), and the ts memoir (5pp) of Major P M Robinson, who served with the 1st/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and was also captured by the Japanese at Singapore, describing life as a POW near Bangpong in Thailand and the administration of the camp by Japanese officers.
