Object description
Ts memoir (67pp), written in 2000, of his evacuation aged 4 with his 10 year old brother, from east London to Angmering-on-Sea, Sussex during the summer of 1939 then a brief period back in London during which the Blitz began, the family home was severely damaged by bombing and he began to suffer from attacks of shaking which was referred to as 'bomb shock', then from November 1940 a further period of evacuation with his brother in Devon, first to Dartmouth with two elderly sisters, where they were separated, and finally in the small village of Paracombe where, billeted together, they remained for the duration of the war. He describes vividly the journey from London to Devon in crowded trains of overwrought children and his unhappiness at his brief separation from his brother, and gives a detailed account of their life in the village, in particular the school, their first Christmas there, the village summer fair, his growing interest in and knowledge of the countryside and farming and the village children's experimentation with sex; and also describing the trauma of leaving his foster family and the village and their return to London and their parents.
