Microfilm copy of two ts diaries (15pp and 47pp) covering his service as a subaltern with the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (13th Brigade, 5th Division) on the Western Front, March - April 1915, reflecting his patriotic zeal and describing his first tour of duty in the trenches and a severe bombardment during which a fellow subaltern broke down with shell shock, before becoming Commanding Officer of No 29 Squadron RFC/RAF, November 1917 - December 1918, and describing the social life in his Squadron's officers' mess, successful offensive patrols despite the occasional heavy losses, his opinion of American troops and of Air Chief Marshal Lord Trenchard, and Armistice celebrations. Also held with the collection are copies of an ms letter (1p) to his mother describing the fighting in the Ypres Salient, 18 April 1915; two ts letters (2pp) to his parents describing his wounding at Hill 60, 20 - 21 April 1915; an ms letter (2pp) to his mother giving his opinion of Captain Albert Ball VC, ca December 1916; and a sheet (1p) of press cuttings relating to his service in the Royal Flying Corps, 1916 - 1918.
